no face spirited away drawing
Anyone into anime, surely knows who No-Face is. In the Ghibli masterpiece – 'Spirited Away', he's the hungry, gold-giving – and also misunderstood… monster! Hands down, although somewhat scary to some – he's easily my favorite character in the movie.
I for some reason you haven't yet seen Spirited Away – I highly recommend it. Other great movies, also by Hayao Miyazaki include – Princess Mononoke, Howl's Moving Castle… and his earliest work – Nausicaa of the Valley of the Wind – equally amazing!!
And now – we draw! 🙂
First Step – Designing a Framework
Recreating a drawing of this creature – in monster form, can be more easy if we first map out a simple-yet-recognizeable framework – one that takes on the shape of our subject.
Of course, had we gone with his ghostly spirit form, this lesson (and step) would be far easier! Oh well… this will be fun…
If you can remember – No-Face LOVES to eat. It takes a lot to satisfy his appetite as we learned from that memorable scene in the bath house. Big round circles help to show his large mass.
The tiny oval at the top – marking off his mask, can be adjusted to best suit the look you want. If you look at a picture of the monster/spirit – you'll see that there is a distinct shape to the mask. Detail as you wish!
Second Step – Drawing No-Face!
As you progress though the lesson – drawing him at a 3/4 angle… you may notice a few subtle differences between the one in the movie – and the one I've recreated as a homage – here. For example – I left his hair out here as I think it looks a bit neater. But of course – add it if wish!
So then, here's how this character gradually takes shape in the form of a drawing…
Key to the fun in creating a likeness to any famous character, is being able to bring out those key elements that truly bring you back to the moment in the film/show that made them famous. Here, it's the offering of gold that really made this character special – and so, I incorporated this in the drawing.
And so, how did you find the lesson? How did yours turn out? Well, I hope you enjoyed it!
